Visas, health, budget: preparing for your trip

Passport, glasses and an open bag ready for departure

A successful trip to Madagascar takes a few weeks of preparation. Here is what to check before you leave.

Passport and visa

A valid passport is essential, generally with at least six months’ validity after your return date. A tourist visa is required; depending on your nationality, it can be obtained online or on arrival. Requirements change regularly, so check them with the Madagascar embassy or consulate before you travel.

Health

See a doctor or a travel health clinic several weeks before departure to review vaccinations and malaria prevention. Pack mosquito repellent, sunscreen and a small first-aid kit.

Insurance

Bemiray Tours insurance does not cover repatriation or illness. Travel insurance with assistance and repatriation cover is therefore strongly recommended.

Money and budget

The local currency is the ariary. Bring cash for remote regions, where card payments are still rare. Your Bemiray quote sets out what is included in the price and what is at your own expense.

What to pack

  • Hat, sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Windbreaker and a light jumper for cool evenings
  • Walking shoes and binoculars
  • Repellent and a small blanket for long drives
