February 07th City tours + Queen Palace

The Queen’s Palace (Rova Manjakamiadana in Malagasy) was the official residence of Madagascar’s 19th-century rulers in Antananarivo.

Perched on one of the city’s highest hills, it can be seen for miles around. Since at least the 17th century, the site has been the headquarters of an important Merina royal garrison, the rova having earned the city its name (Antananarivo, the “City of a Thousand” [soldiers]). It was during the reigns of Andrianampoinimerina (1787-1810), unifier of the Emyrna, and Radama I (1810-1828), conqueror of most of Madagascar, that the first significant royal residence was built. Lunch at Café du Musée within the Photography Museum of Madagascar which was set up in 2013 as a non-profit organization under the 1960 Act. Its mission is to digitize photographs taken in Madagascar between 1860 and 1960, in order to preserve and promote the country’s photographic heritage and encourage the Malagasy people to take ownership of their history.
