Welcoming

Malagasy people are marines who came to live on a big island and kept the sense of direction of a marine on the ocean. So in daily life, as opposed to western people who use “on the right, on the left, straight, behind, above and below”, Malgasy people refer only to the points of compass that are eight or nine with the center. To locate themselves, to show a way or to tell about the place of an object, they will use “in the north, the south, the east, the west, in the northeast, the northwest, the southeast, the southwest”

These points of compass have a social and political meaning. The north is associated with power, authority and commandment. The south is associated with subjection, servitude, humility and inferiority. The east is associated with the sacred, the ancestors and the Creator. And the west is associated with profanity, impurity and the stranger.

As much as words do, location expresses power, the sacred, inferiority or impurity…

For the newcomer, the cultural, historical and geographical landscape of Madagascar appear as simple as the smile of its people. A few months suffice to notice that this appearance is tricky, and the “vahiny” who is attentive will start a fascinating journey while meeting the Other. To be accompanied in this quest by the explanations of erudite men and women is an unmeasurable wealth.

The Bemiray TOURS team wish you a good trip ! See you soon !

Preface by Mr. Albert Rakoto Ratsimamanga

Antananarivo, the City of a Thousand, laden with the history of a people which has left its mark by fashioning Analamanga hill with its architecture, its interminable steps, its huge supporting walls, its very warm colours, its stunning far-ranging views of the Imerina high plateaux, remains, however, little known to the vast majority of people who only see it as a transit town with its airport, its main hotels, its traffic jams, its wealth and its poverty, on their journey to postcard beaches, wild and majestic mountain ranges. Yet the capital of the Red Island is well worth a visit, it deserves the effort of discovery, to try to understand it, through the mystery of its neighbourhoods full of history, rich with beauty, which have been built by men and women who are marked by tradition and symbols.
