Bemiray Tours
Makay is a ruiniform massif dating back to the Jurassic period, located in central-western Madagascar, measuring 150×50 km.
It is separated from Isalo by the Mangoky River and is located in the Beroroho region (southeast) and northwest of the Mandabe region.
Early morning departure from Ranohira heading north, passing by the Isalo massif, to the Mangoky River, 165 km of poorly maintained track, approximately 6 hours’ drive, passing through savannah dotted with small baobab trees. Cross the Mangoky River by motorized ferry to reach Beroroho, the regional capital and last outpost of civilization before entering the wilderness; quick lunch, then continue north for 65 km on a dirt road to reach the village of Beronono, where we meet the team of porters.
Set up camp on the banks of the Makay River.
Start of the trek in the Makay, immersing ourselves completely in the mountains for four days; little known and rarely explored, this is a true sanctuary for flora and fauna that have not yet revealed all their secrets. Departure for the Mahatiny cave to discover rock paintings and continuation to the summit of this eroded massif made up of yellowish and red ruiniform sandstone and largely covered with dry vegetation.
Night in tents on the banks of the Makay River.
Departure after breakfast to explore the narrow Ambinanitelo canyon and continue to the summit to discover the ridge and plateau of this massif, with views of the Nosilahy lakes.
Overnight stay and camping in tents at Nosilahy.
Canyon day:
We cross the Nosilahy canyon gorges where crystal clear water flows, then follow the stream at the bottom of canyons that can be several hundred meters high and are home to humid vegetation. Water is omnipresent in these canyons, with views of the Behetaheta forest and continuation to the second canyon of Sakamanitra and night in tents.
Visit Lake Sariaka and trek to the summit for an impressive view of the two lakes, Sariaka and Nosilahy, then return to the village of Beronono.
Return to Ranohira and spend the night at a hotel.
