As large as France and Belgium combined, Madagascar has not one climate but several. Yet two main seasons shape the whole island: a dry season from April to November, and a hot, humid season from December to March.
April to November: the ideal season
This is the best time for a first trip. The tracks are passable, skies are often clear and most parks are accessible. From June to August, it gets cool in the Highlands, especially in the evening, so pack a warm layer.
- April – May: landscapes still green, moderate crowds
- June – August: pleasantly cool, ideal for hiking
- September – November: rising temperatures, very active wildlife
December to March: the rainy season
Showers are frequent, especially on the east coast, and cyclones can occur. Some tracks in the west become difficult, and the Tsingy de Bemaraha park is generally only accessible in the dry season. On the other hand, it is a beautiful season for plant life.
Not to be missed
From July to September, humpback whales gather in the Sainte-Marie Channel. Lemurs can be seen all year round, with variations depending on the species and region.
Each region has its own subtleties: our travel consultants will tell you the best time for the itinerary of your dreams, and adapt the route to the season.
